APS Two-day course for Designers and Principal Designers
This course is delivered in partnership with Synergie Training who are APS accredited trainers
This course is designed to:
1. Simplify CDM 2015 by providing tools that can be applied to any kind of project;
2. Clarify the core requirements of CDM: The right people in the right teams with effective communication;
3. Examine the duties of the Client as the keystone of projects and how their duties link to other CDM duty holders;
4. Review what the law actually asks of designers and principal designers and how to achieve this on projects of varying size and complexity – Design risk management;
5. Facilitate conversations about challenges and potential solutions to provide a springboard for positive future performance – systems and processes, checks and balances; and
6. Allow for ongoing high-level support of delegates.
Day 1 is full of true stories to provide memory hooks for delegates. It introduces some tools that are referenced throughout the course using simple and engaging examples, likely to be within delegates experience. It typically contains several breakout sessions to allow for small group discussion and engagement from the start.
Day 1 covers
· Introductory focus – communication
· The various aspects of law we need to manage CDM – statute, tort, contract
· CDM in the bigger picture – other H&S law; cost, programme, public perception, more… and how to manage these
· The regulator as friend and foe. Managing and mitigating this especial risk
· CDM2015 structure and layout – how to read the book from copyright page onwards
· General Principles of Prevention
· Regulation 8 – building the team
· Top table duty holder high level duties and information flow. Regulation 12
· The Client and Regulation 5 and 6
· Regulation 7 (and 16(3)), because we all have a go at home and because it explains a good deal
· Regulation 4 because now we have all the elements, we can look at the Client main, and very extensive duties.
· How the Principal Designer can support the Client.
Day 2 covers
· Introductory focus – communication and contracts
· Regulation 9 and 10 Designers duties. Are they really what we have assumed they are?
· Regulation 11 Principal Designers duties. Some challenging responsibilities.
· Design risk management – how not to do it and how to deal with this challenge professionally. Examples from industry. Includes feedback loops from site, examples from architecture and engineering, whole asset life time challenges.
· Workshop based on delegates experiences and existing systems (note that for in house courses this is better discussed in detail with the Tutor so that it can be based on real examples and existing systems)
· Our Tutor provides ongoing support and mentoring for delegates, should they need to discuss particular challenges they may face in relation to CDM and is keen to empower others to excel.
Our Tutor for this course is Liz Bennett BSc PGCE CEng FICE CMIOSH FRSA who has being delivering Zoom and Teams courses remotely since well before the Covid 19 crisis for clients. Working with Synergie Training and the APS she helped Synergie Training to be the first approved supplier to adapt to delivering Zoom and Teams courses for APS accredited courses. Liz has been on Council of the APS (See https://www.aps.org.uk/ ) and is Chair of the Design for Health Task Group (See https://www.healthinconstruction.co.uk/ ) and Chair of Constructing Excellence Somerset (See https://constructingexcellencesw.org.uk/ ).
Liz has been working with national, regional and local clients of all sizes for many years and has had interim roles as Head of Health and Safety for Essex County Council, LOCOG London 2012 Olympics and the Environment Agency.
Recently Liz’s focus has been on training and empowering others. Liz is a qualified teacher. She has been Visiting Fellow at Aston University, External Examiner at Glasgow Caledonian and the lay Member of the Research Ethics Committee of the University of the West of England in Bristol.
She has had current or recent long and medium term relationships with:
· Heathrow Airport – training all their Project Managers on CDM 2015 and providing strategic advice to Directors on Expansion and other major projects;
· National Trust helping them shape their approach to CDM 2015 for all sizes of projects and developing training programmes and approaches for others to follow;
· Various local authorities up and down the country providing CDM courses and mentoring approaches to suit their particular needs;
· Staff from a huge range of consultancies and contractors from a wide range of industries including bridges, highways, buildings, housing, maintenance, nuclear, energy, rail, offshore wind and so on who have benefited from training, workshops and ongoing collaboration and networking.
